Every first timer who makes use of contact lenses for eyes goes through a series of questions. Are lenses suitable for me ? or How do I wear them ? or How do I clean my lenses these are just a few of numerous queries that people have related to the use of lenses. Once you have made your mind in favor of contact lenses the very first step that you must take is to visit your ophthalmologist. An ophthalmologist is commonly known as an Eye Specialist. He would thoroughly check your eyesight and prescribe the perfect set of lenses for your beautiful eyes. In addition to the prescription he would also guide you through use , replacement, cleaning and protection of lenses. He is your best judge in adoption & replacement of lenses. When wearing contact lenses for the first time you might be amused thinking about which side is the correct one to wear. If you are among the lucky few who can read the laser imprint you would not require a guide to help you through the process. But if your lens has not got a laser imprint over it then the easiest way to locate the wearable side of the contact lens is to hold it on your finger tip. Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly every time before touching your lenses this secures them from unnecessary harmful deposits. When held over finger tip if the contact lens forms a U shape with the edges extended outwards its inside out. You must reverse it before wearing. A contact lens if worn from the wrong side would not do any harm but would be uncomfortable. A contact lens wearable side is when it forms a simple U shape with it edges not flaring outwards.A wide range of contact lenses is available in market. You can expect to have a hard time deciding. All the contact lenses can be condensed under categories depending upon various factors like wear ability, replacement and composition. Based on composition contact lenses come in two broad categories namely soft and rigid gas permeable. Soft lenses are easy to adapt and wear as they contain 25 % to 80% water but are not usually durable. Rigid gas permeable lenses on the other hand are more durable however it takes time to adapt to them. Rigid lenses in some cases offer better vision to individuals than soft contact lenses. There upright payment is mostly higher as they can be used for several years. In case of soft lenses they can be replaced on daily, weekly, monthly and after 1 year. Contact lenses in which one can sleep are known as extended wear lens others are daily wear.
The origin of music as of late has not yet been dated as it is said to have been existent long before recorded history. Historians say it may hav originated from naturally occuring sounds like the sound of thunder, or the rhythm of a flowing stream. Human music may have started from primitive men trying to mimic these sounds using patterns, repetition, and tonality. Even at present, certain cultures utilize music that imitate naturally occuring sounds. Apart from the usual bird song and animals tapping on hollowed logs to mark their territory, man's voice is said to be the first musical instrument.Music, in the olden days, was said to have been used mainly for shamanistic practices and beliefs,. Apart from religious practices, it was also used for entertainment and/or practical functions. Music is present during times of feasts and festivities, it is used as a form of praise and worship. Men and women also used it to while away idle time. Hunters used music to lure animals right into their traps. Music has served a lot of function in primitive society.Due to music's functionality to sharmanism, it was believed that music's main use was to be a means of communication to the spirit world. Primitive people believed that spirits of different beings: nature, animal, or men, play vital roles in human lives. People also used to believe that their physical well-being is connected to the spirit, that illnesses and diseases were related to an imbalance in the harmony of the body and soul. Shamans, or what we call witch doctors in present times, were the healers, gurus and magicians of their tribe. They are responsible for getting rid of illnesses by uttering chants, singing, dancing, meditating and drumming. At present times, music is still being used as a form of therapy to provide stress relief and treat people with anxiety disorders among other mental conditions. It is more popularly known as music therapy. The form of therapy is at least as old as the writings of Aristotle. It was first administered during World War 1 and 2 where community musicians would visit hospitals to play for physically and emotionally traumatized soldiers. Simply put, music therapy is the use of music by a trained professional to achieve therapeutic goals. These therapeutic goals may include: promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings, enhancing memory, improving communication and promoting physical rehabilitation.Recent studies have shown that listening to music during an anxiety attack can help calm the person down. This proves most efficient for patients experiencing anxiety prior to undergoing surgery. It is the most easily administered, inexpensive, non-invasive, non-threatening tool to calm preoperative anxiety.Music is an incredibly powerful form of expression. It combines words and melodies to get messages across. Some songs may trigger different happy or sad memories in your mind. This is the strongest proof that music affects human emotions. Giving people with anxiety disorders a creative outlet such as music may be a good way for sufferers to, little by little, let out the source of their anxieties and alleviate patients moods.Healthy individuals may use music therapy as a form of stress relief through active music making. The exercise includes drumming and using the guitar to make sounds. The passive approach requires listening for relaxation. Music can also be used as accompaniment during exercise like calisthenics, yoga, or tai chi.Music has also been proven helpful to improve memory and motor skills for children in special classes. This also helps strengthen children's non-musical functions such as their communication skills and physical coordination skills required for daily life.Music has been very helpful for everyday living. From the primitive caveman to the modern scientists, everybody would agree in saying music is indeed the food for the soul, and in this therapy, for the mind and body as well.
People are becoming more and more practical in the way they spend money. We always try to look for ways to save as much money as we can. This is the reason why there are stores coming out left and right selling clothes at discounted prices, fast food chains being set up selling huge servings of food at low prices as compared to home-cooked meals, and most recently drugstores setting up shop on the Internet selling prescription medications at very cheap prices. But are they safe?A lot of people want to know where to buy cheap medicine online. Senior citizens need it because most health care plans do not cover the cost of medication. People who live in tight budget could use the savings to help them with other expenses. In both cases, the extra money saved in the cost of the prescription will help them a lot.But with the thousands of Internet pharmacies currently in operation, how can you distinguish a good online drugstore from a bad one. Here are some things to watch out for:A good Internet-based drugstore is licensed by your local pharmacy board to operate in and/or sell medications to your state. Every pharmacy, be it land-based or on the web, needs to be inspected and certified by the local board before they can start selling medicines.A legal pharmacy doing business in the World Wide Web should be accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy or NABP. This means that they have passed the organizations inspection and have met the necessary standards required from an online drugstore. Also, being accredited by the NABP means that the web-based drugstore company is a part of the Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites or VIPPS.An honest Internet pharmacy should ask you for a proper prescription before they sell you medications. This is in accordance to pharmacy policies that prescription drugs can only be dispensed to people with prescription notes. The prescription note serves as a confirmation that a buyer had sought the consult of a physician and was indeed endorsed to take the prescription drug he wants to buy.In cases of online pharmacies that do not require a prescription note, some of them offer an online consultation service with a licensed doctor through voice chatting and webcam. This is beneficial to people who are unable to leave home to see a doctor. But customers must be cautious in dealing with web-based drugstores that offer to sell prescription medicines without requiring a prescription or offering a consult service, this may be an indication that the drugstore company is illegal. An Internet drugstore that does not hide anything from its consumers will not hide its stand on protecting your privacy. Look for an online pharmacy that has a clear privacy procedure to protect all the information you submit to their website. To protect your privacy and your health, do not make transactions with online pharmacy websites that you feel are suspicious. Contact your local pharmacy board to report these kinds of companies to protect your rights as a consumer.
On February 9, 2004, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a final rule prohibiting the sale of dietary supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids or ephedra. It stated that such supplements present an unreasonable risk of illness or injury. FDA also reiterates its advice that consumers stop using ephedra products immediately. Two thousand years ago ephedra (under the name Ma huang) was used in Chinese medicine to treat several disorders. Amongst other illnesses, asthma and bronchitis were treated with ephedra. Ephedra comes from a plant that has a few powerful active compounds, of which ephedrine is the most useful. Ephedra is a shrub-like plant that is found in desert regions in central Asia and other parts of the world. The dried greens of the plant are used medicinally. Ephedra is a stimulant containing the herbal form of ephedrine, an FDA-regulated drug found in many over-the-counter asthma medications. In the United States, ephedra and ephedrine are sold over-the-counter (OTC) in pharmacies and in health food stores under a variety of brand names. Currently, ephedrine is widely used as a weight loss drug, as an energy booster, and as an athletic performance enhancer. These products often contain other stimulants, such as caffeine, which may have synergistic effects and increase the potential for adverse effects. Over the past few years, ephedra has gained much more attention for its side-effects: an increased metabolism, plus the thermeogenic and fat-burning qualities that come along with it. This gives the body stimulation and provides energy. Thanks to these qualities, ephedra now has the reputation of being a fat-burner, smartdrug and sports supplement. A reputation that has recently become controversial because of the ban on ephedra products in the United States and the Netherlands.Studies have suggested that herbal supplements are generally not advised by the established medical community, including continuous warnings from the FDA. The real problem with herbal supplements is not in their effectiveness, but their side effects, which often include drastic increases in blood pressure and heart problems. Ephedrine alkaloids are amphetamine-like compounds used in OTC and prescription drugs with potentially lethal stimulant effects on the central nervous system and heart. The FDA has received more than 800 reports of adverse effects associated with use of products containing ephedrine alkaloid since 1994. These serious adverse effects, include hypertension (elevated blood pressure), palpitations (rapid heart rate), neuropathy (nerve damage), myopathy (muscle injury), psychosis, stroke, memory loss, heart rate irregularities, insomnia, nervousness, tremors, seizures, heart attacks, and death. The agency has proposed to prohibit the marketing of dietary supplements containing eight milligrams or more of ephedrine alkaloids per serving.Despite its many potentially harmful "side effects" , ephedrine is for the most part, dangerous only if abused. Nevertheless, it offers a variety of positive qualities in terms of its beneficial effects on particular aspects of the mind and body. One of its more significant qualities is its potential effect on "weight loss" . In short, ephedrine has shown promising signs in terms of its generally positive effects on the human body, especially on the reduction of fat and body weight. But research has also shown that is is virtually impossible to achieve weight loss without a healthy diet and regular exercise. Therefore, it seems that the most logical solution to lose weight must involve the proper combination of diet, exercise, and drug interaction. Ephedrine may hold the key to fill in for the drug portion of the equation, but as with practically all drugs, there are risks involved. Whether ephedrine is too dangerous to be sold in OTC products, is still under debate. Ephedrine does have great potential, yet is it worth the risks?
Who would ever think that a hugely popular virtual reality adventure video game Duke Nukem could provide crucial clues not only in diagnosing depression, but also in determining the severity of such illness? Instead of the usual series of probing questions about dreams and relationship with your family, relatives or friends, you are sent forth to fight against marauding aliens in a virtual environment. What attracted the interest of the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) team of experts is the navigational tasks involve in the game more than its martial elements. Based on different studies about depression, the condition could be linked to shrinkage or dysfunction of the hippocampus, the part of the brain in charged with memory and spatial awareness. With the use of a virtual town lifted from Duke Nukem scenes, volunteers are instructed to navigate their way to various landmarks around that town for a period of time. With the exception of the weaponry and the aliens, the NIMH team led by Leda Gould, have been able to asses spatial awareness and memory.A distinct impairment of these mental functions was exhibited by those volunteers who are suffering from depression. This provided provided Gould and her team with a yardstick against which to measure the severity of their depression, with the most chronically depressed volunteers posting the worst results in the trial.Neuropsychological testing has long established the presence of memory deficits in patients with unipolar depression, and, more recently, in those suffering from bipolar depression, wrote Gould in her article in the American Journal of Psychiatry.Traditionally tasks assessing spatial memory require individuals to remember the position of items in an array.Because of their multi-faceted nature, navigational tasks based on virtual reality may provide a more consistent, sensitive measure of spatial ability and are more likely to require hippocampal involvement, thereby increasing their sensitivity to the impact of depression on this cognitive domain.Other physical illnesses such as diabetes can be diagnosed and assessed with a simple test. However, there is no method yet to quantify the severity of a mental health condition like depression.Depression is extremely complex, explains London-based psychoanalyst Jean Allen, And can be very hard to diagnose and evaluate. It manifests itself in a variety of different ways for a variety of different people. At one end of the scale you have got those who suffer only mildly and whose lives aren't too badly affected; at the other you have chronic clinical depression that, at its worst, can tip into full-scale psychosis.Measuring exactly where someone is on that continuum, or indeed if they are on it at all, is very hard.Although The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders have laid out categories of mental disorder, and various criteria for diagnosing and assessing those disorders, as well as numerous depression rating scales have been developed to quantify and measure the severity of mental illness, all these remain as imprecise science. They basically rely on a gradual piecing together of information through question and answer, rather than any clear cut, one-off diagnostic test. There are a variety of questionnaires you can use to help assess someone's "mental health" condition, says Jean Allen, But from a psychoanalyst's point of view they are not really very accurate. This is where the virtual reality navigation test comes in to fill such gap. While the study does not provide a clear-cut technique for actually diagnosing depression, it definitely offers the possibility of a new and more accurate yardstick for measuring the level of depression.
